  • Transformation of Rousay Pier Waiting Room Heritage Information Facility

On Saturday 14 October, the completed transformation of Rousay Ferry Pier Waiting Room was unveiled to the local community and the wider public.

Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Heritage SCIO, with assistance from NILPS, aimed to update and enhance the display of a diversity of heritage materials and information contained in the Waiting Room by using a range of media to colourfully tell Rousay’s story. They also wanted to promote Rousay’s heritage in an interactive and engaging way that would appeal to a wide range of people. The consequential and beautiful refurbishment of the Pier Waiting Room which was revealed came about through the combined co-operation, ideas, enthusiasm, research and designs of all those involved.

Through the talents of designer Rhona Jenkins and her colleague Gail Drinkall, Rousay Pier Waiting Room has been transformed into an enthralling array of archaeological, historical and natural heritage. Life-size cut-outs of local people past and native birds present, along with detailed wall murals, provide captivating points of interest, while panels impart fascinating information via text, photos and illustrations. An info-point is also accessible through either a touch-screen or by using a QR code.

Positive feedback on the new installation has been flowing in and both REW Heritage SCIO and NILPS are delighted to hear how well the initiative is being received.

Designed as a permanent display which is capable of being updated, the cultural, social and economic heritage of Rousay is the focus of the metamorphosised Ferry Pier Waiting Room, which will bestow enchantment on islanders and visitors alike in a superb creation that will continue to celebrate and safeguard the island’s diverse heritage for the future.
