Stronsay Heritage Centre sits in Whitehall Village, at Woods Yard. It's home to a huge collection of artefacts and resources that help tell you about the history of the island. It's run by a group of dedicated volunteers, it's open daily, mostly unmanned and entrance is free, although donations are very welcome.
The Stronsay Heritage Society and Stronsay Development Trust are actively looking to secure a permanent location for the Stronsay Heritage Centre in the future, and plans are ongoing to address this. With NILPS funding, Stronsay Heritage Society engaged heritage design professionals to help create an interpretation plan for a future heritage centre. This looked at items in the collection, the stories that are important to tell, design and layout options, display options for artefacts in the collection and the heritage society were also supported with some workshops to look at the restoration and ongoing care of artefacts in the collection.
From this initial piece of work NILPS funding supported some elements of work that could happen in the existing heritage centre and be moved in the future to a new location if or when that might happen. Pictures below show new cabinets that were built locally, 2 new museum standard display cases - one holds an accordian that belonged to the local musician who wrote 'the Stronsay waltz' and one holds an original Harbour Masters Journal, along with interpretation that was researched, designed and printed to sit alongside the new displays.
