Bumblebees are important pollinators of flowering plants. Eleven species of bumblebee have been recorded in Orkney and one of them, the endangered Great Yellow Bumblebee, counts Orkney as one of its few remaining strongholds in the UK.

Sending in records of bumblebee sightings will create a clearer picture of their distribution in the North Isles and help identify places that are of particular importance to them, as well as indicating those areas that could be improved for bees and other pollinators.

Any flower rich area is a good place to start looking for bees, including your garden. The Great Yellow Bumblebee likes Red Clover and Knapweed – so where you find these plants growing are good places to look for this species.
