Orkney’s marine wildlife is rich and diverse – from kelp forests and seaweed beds to eelgrass and living reefs of maerl and horse mussels. There is a lot of life to record but because much of it is hard to reach, it is under-recorded.

Isles events 2021-2023

This project aims to encourage recording and surveying of all marine life – through activities that are suitable for those who don’t mind getting wet as well as those that would rather stay relatively dry. In 2021 and 2022 we’ll be organising marine recording days in the isles to help get people started.

Events will include:

  • Shore surveys – in rockpools and along strandlines
  • Snorkelling – snorkel training and recording what you find
  • Talks about different aspects of marine wildlife

Community-led marine recording groups

Are you interested in setting up a local marine wildlife recording group on your island? If so, we may be able to help you by funding shore survey equipment and helping you get started. For more information email [email protected]

If you would like to learn more about surveying in the meantime, click here for information from SNH about Community-led marine recording.
