North Isles Ferries – Interpretation and Engagement Project

Sanday Ferry
Key Information:
Theme:

Communities

Time Span:

October 2019 – September 2022

Area:

Throughout The Isles

The ferries operating around the North Isles, and their associated terminals, provide a lifeline service to the communities who use them. For visitors, ferry services provide a gateway to their North Isles experience.

This project will deliver a variety of initiatives aimed at enhancing the knowledge and experience of ferry service users in the North Isles.

The current fleet operating around the North Isles is ageing, with limited interpretation and information on board. For local people and visitors, the opportunity to utilise journey time on the ferries in a more meaningful and productive manner has great potential in terms of enhancing their travel experience.

This project will deliver a variety of initiatives, including community refurbishment of North Isles ferry waiting rooms (led by local artists), provision of WIFI access on the North Isles ferries, interactive displays, development and collation of data and information for these displays, development and provision of nature surveys and interactive activities for passengers on the ferries, production of interpretation panels for display internally and externally at ferry terminals.
