The project selected at least one core path on each of the islands to undertake works to improve access and interpretation.
The Castle o’ Burrian is the best place to see Puffin in Orkney during their breeding season. The route at this popular site had become very degraded and difficult to walk. The project funded the creation of a new boardwalk and viewing platform at the start of the walk and repairing other infrastructure and re-routing areas that were severely eroded.
Over 20 new gates were installed around the isles and others were repaired. In some cases, gates were installed to replace stiles to improve accessibility. Elsewhere, new gates replaced those that were no longer functional.
Interpretation panels were installed at 30 sites to provide information about walking routes and sites of interest. Local stoneworkers were used, adding a touch of individuality to different islands.
This stone bench was installed close to the Stronsay community polycrub – providing a welcome seat for the gardeners and those passing by.
