Theme:

Heritage

Time Span:

April 2020 – March 2022

This project provides an opportunity for people in the North Isles to learn more about how the sea has shaped the history and development of their communities and economies, while gaining new skills in recording and research.

Research will be undertaken into different themes relating to the maritime history of the isles. Topics will include a study of prehistoric seafarers and the early colonisation of the isles, the creation of a shipwreck inventory, an assessment of underwater cultural heritage, the recording of land-based seafaring evidence, and a study of maritime art.

Archaeologists will lead the project, providing opportunities for involvement and training to communities. Other outputs of the project may include artwork, a book, exhibitions and online information.

As the project develops, more information and details about how to take part will be included here. Sign up to our mailing list to find out about the latest developments.
